Helpful Windows Vista Tips
Although Vista is the latest and greatest Microsoft platform and it comes with many benefits, some issues and challenges still exist. To help people get the most out of this operating system, it is important to outline some Windows Vista tips. While much of the activity runs in the background, computer users will run into error messages, freeze ups, and other situations that need to be addressed. Therefore, people purchasing a new computer or upgrading to Vista should understand tips for this Window system better.
• Menu Speed – One of the first tips for Windows Vista has to do with increasing menu speed. As more and more programs are installed, people begin to notice the startup time for the menu increases. To decrease this time, people need to understand that this operating system has a built-in delay setting, meaning for menu items to appear, it takes time. One of the easiest tips is for the registry editor to be launched using “regedit”, which is typed into the search or run area on the Startup Menu. The file would be double clicked and then “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” double clicked. Next, the person would click on “Control Panel” and then “Desktop”. Under the file “MenuShowDelay”, the person would right click and choose “modify”. With the popup, the menu delay time in milliseconds would be changed with the number “one” being instant. When done, the “Ok” button would be pressed.
• Internet Explorer Speed – Another common complaint has to do with the slow speed of Internet Explorer. For Windows Vista, one of the best tips involves loading the registry editor, again going to the Start menu and in the run or search field the person would type in
“regedit”. From there, the folder would be searched for is “HKEY_CURRENT_USER”, “Software”, “Microsoft”, “Windows”, “Current Version”, “Internet Settings”. On the right side, some people will see two files called “MaxConnectionsPerServer” and “MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server”. If the individual double clicks on both of these files and then chooses a decimal value, the connection limit could be greatly improved.
• Hidden Files – Another of the great tips for Windows Vista has to do with finding hidden files. The way Vista is setup is that files and folders are hidden, which allows specific information to be protected. If the user needs to find and show hidden files by default, the process in Vista involves clicking on the “Organize” button within a folder view, and then the “Folder and Search Options” would be selected. From there, the View tab would be clicked at the top of the page and then the person would scroll down, checking the box that says “Show Hidden Files and Folders”. When done, the “Ok” button would be chosen.
